Description
Velella velella are a small purplish jellyfish also known as purple sailors, or by-the-wind-sailor. They turn clear once they have dried up on land, and can be washed ashore by the thousands as shown here.
They move depending upon the winds that drive their clear sail that is set diagonally to the long axis of the animal. While not usually harmful to humans, they are carnivorous.

I saw tons of them in Morro Bay, CA, some weeks ago. It's said they are a sign for a strong El Nino on the way, which would bring the rain California needs so badly. - Beautiful photo! L/F
