Description

A gnarled, old tree stands at the edge of a babbling stream covered with moss. Lichen hangs from its branches like an old man's beard. The photo is finished with a painterly brushstroke and texture, edged with a slim dark green border.

Lichens in the genus Usnea are often called "old man's beard". Some species can have fibers over ten feet long. This species is sensitive to air pollution, growing only where the air is very clean. It grows in rain forests around the world, but its habitat is shrinking as pollution increases.

The Pacific Northwest is one of the last areas for this lichen. This tree was photographed on the Staircase Trail in the Olympic National Forest, Washington.
