This composite image portrays a quilt and writer Lottie Grimke. (1837-1914) Quilts played a significant role during the Civil War, and Lottie Grimke was a champion of the Underground Railroad.
Lottie preserved in her journals a history of violence upon fugitive slaves. She was also the first black teacher of white students in Massachusetts.
The quilt image is one of my own. The portrait of Ms. Grimke is credited to The New York Public Library public domain site which encourages artists to download their material and create something new with it.
The photo is enhanced to finish with a light painterly style and texture.
